FRCA examiner

The College invites applications for vacancies to the Board of Examiners in the Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists annually. Examiners will be recruited to the Primary examination in the first instance and the number required will reflect the number of retirements from the current Board of Examiners.


  • To have the expectancy of completing 10 years as an examiner.
  • Must be able to commit to approx12 days to the role (flexi or LTFT working possible after 1st year).
  • In good standing with the College and hold full registration with the GMC.
  • Attendance at two exam diets per academic year or part-time/flexible equivalent.
  • Attendance and/or contribution to joint writing days where required.
  • Active contribution to the development and submission of questions.
  • To contribute to questions and content for the e-learning Anaesthesia project as required.
  • To take part in the examiner appraisal process as required and carry out annual exam specific equality and diversity training.
  • Attendance at examiner meeting and briefings.
  • Attendance and contribution to Core Groups and Working Parties.
  • To attend standard checking days if a Final examiner.
  • Participation in induction and ongoing training programmes.


  • Must be a Fellow of the College.
  • Holds full registration without limitation, with the GMC.
  • Must have at least five years experience as a substantive consultant/SAS grade.
  • Must be in active clinical practice in the NHS.
  • Can demonstrate active involvement in the training and assessment of trainees.
  • Has visited a Primary or Final FRCA examination in the last five years.
  • Satisfactory completion of equal opportunities training in the last three years.
  • Demonstrate high professional standards as a trainer and/ or examiner.
  • Fully up to date with the requirements and practices of Anaesthesia.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the level of knowledge, skills and attitudes required of a candidate to pass FRCA Examination components.


  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to handle challenging people and situations with discretion, tact and diplomacy.
  • A team player, friendly, and an expert in your specialty.
